MCS 335 - Detective Fiction/Criminal Geography3 credits The detective story is one of the most popular yet also one of the most devalued of all literary genres. As its emergence historically corresponds with the rise of the city, it has also been widely recognized as a distinctively urban literary form: one that attempts to redress claims of knowledge, crime, and power within increasingly intractable urban environments. This course will thus approach the practice of ¿detection¿ as a tool to examine the formative relationships between the urban world and its subjects across histories of race, class, gender, and ethnicity. Prerequisite(s): ENG 100 or ENG 101
