Degree Requirements

Ensuring your degree path is on track

You should review your MaineStreet degree audit (Degree Progress Report DPR) and work with your advisor on your degree audit if there are any course substitutions that need to be processed.  Please DO let the Office of Student Records know if the degree audit does not appear to be pulling the correct set of requirements (i.e. catalog edition) or if the audit is not recognizing when a requirement has already been met.

Application for Graduation

Guidance for students approaching graduation

When it is time to apply for graduation in MaineStreet, be sure to pick the closest term possible if you cannot pick your current completion term. MaineStreet is term-driven, not session-driven, so it has a hard time recognizing a completion WITHIN a term. Example: You finish in Summer Session 1 and it does not allow you to pick that Summer term, pick the Fall term, or if allowed, the PREVIOUS Spring term, then contact the Office of Student Records.

If you cannot choose the correct Commencement Participation Date, contact the Office of Student Records.

Graduation Participation Policy

Students whose degree requirements will not be completed prior to the graduation ceremony in May will still be permitted to participate in the ceremony provided that at least one of the following criteria have been met:

  1. The student has 6 credits or fewer remaining, or;
  2. The student has two courses or fewer remaining, or;
  3. The student only needs to complete student teaching, an internship, or a practicum as the final part of their program, or;
  4. The student has developed a plan, with the approval of their faculty and professional academic advisors, to complete all remaining requirements by the conclusion of the subsequent fall semester. The plan must show that the student will be eligible to receive their degree before the start of the next spring semester, and a copy of this plan must be on file with the Registrar’s Office.

For options 1, 2, or 3, all requirements must be anticipated to be completed by the following December. Prior to the end of November preceding the May ceremony, students wishing to participate in graduation as allowed by this policy must file an application to graduate.

A student may not participate in two separate graduation exercises for the same degree.

All UMPI students are requested to complete a “future plans” survey when they participate in graduation rehearsal in the spring of each year. The survey is administered in the campus auditorium shortly before rehearsal begins.

Graduation with Distinction

Students receive graduation honors of distinction in one of three categories by attaining the requisite Grade Point Averages (GPAs) in all coursework taken at UMPI.

Cum Laude 3.500 - 3.699
Magna cum Laude 3.700 - 3.899
Summa cum Laude 3.900 and above

For the purpose of wearing honor cords at the graduation ceremony, coursework taken during the semester or session prior to graduation will not be used in the calculation of honors. Because semester grades are not calculated until after the graduation ceremony, it is possible that a student’s honors status may change by the time degrees are awarded. The final honors status printed on the student’s diploma and any future transcripts will be based on the student’s cumulative GPA directly following the semester for which the degree is awarded.

Office of Alumni Relations

The Office of Alumni Relations, in collaboration with the UMPI Alumni Association, works to deliver programs, events, services, benefits, and other opportunities to our growing population of approximately 10,000 active alumni around the world.

  • providing opportunities for alumni to connect and support one another
  • providing opportunities to connect current students to alumni for mentoring and networking
  • promoting the accomplishments, both large and small, of our alumni population
  • serving as an alumni representative on campus
  • maintaining communications with our alumni and friends
  • supporting and advising the UMPI Alumni Association and its Board of Directors
