Statement of Principle
The University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) welcomes applications for admission from academically qualified students of various backgrounds. Each applicant’s academic credentials and life experiences are evaluated individually. The University values a broad range of achievements and qualities that demonstrate the potential for academic success.
Application Procedures
Traditional/Campus-Based Programs:
- Each applicant for admission is required to submit a completed University of Maine System Application Form or the Common App. Applicants should apply electronically online at https://www.umpi.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/. Each applicant must arrange for the forwarding of secondary school transcripts to the Admissions Office.

In order to be considered official, UMPI must receive the transcripts directly from the institution or from the transcript service used by the institution.
-
Letters of recommendation from a school counselor or teacher are not required from traditional-age students just graduating from high school. However, references and essays are welcome, should the applicant choose to submit one or both with his/her application. Please note that MLT applicants are required to submit an essay with their applications. Please click on https://www.umpi.edu/academics/mlt/admission-requirements/ for specific information about applying to the MLT program.

Transfer Requirements from Within the University of Maine System
An internal transfer student is defined as a transfer student whose most recent collegiate work has been within the University of Maine System.
Prospective internal transfer students must submit an application that can be found at https://apps.maine.edu/applymaine/#/
Internal transfer students who are in good standing at another school within the University of Maine System will be accepted at UMPI.
Students who have completed the ‘General Education Block’ at another UMS institution at the time they transfer to UMPI will be considered to have met all the requirements of the UMPI General Education Curriculum.
Students whose transcripts indicate they are not in good standing (i.e., on probation, suspension, or dismissal) will not be admitted to a degree program at UMPI, but may attend as a non-degree student. Non-degree students may be accepted for admission after successfully completing three to nine credits at UMPI.
Transfer Requirements from Outside the University of Maine System
UMPI encourages the admission of qualified transfer students from two-year and four-year colleges.
Transfer students are required to submit official transcripts from all colleges attended. Students with less than 60 earned semester credits will also be required to submit an official copy of their final high school transcript.
Applicants will not be considered for admission to UMPI for the semester immediately following their dismissal from another institution. Such students can, however, enroll as non-degree students for one semester.
International Students
Students from around the world are welcome at UMPI and are encouraged to apply for admission. In order to comply with University admission policies and regulations of the Immigration & Naturalization Service of the United States, students from other countries need to fulfill particular requirements. Below is an overview of the requirements for both online and in-person international students. Please refer to our https://www.umpi.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/ page often for the most up-to-date requirements and guidance. Contact our Admissions Office with any questions you may have.
Step 1: Complete your application at this https://www.umpi.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/
Step 2: Submit Transcripts for Credential Evaluations
At UMPI, we require all international educational documents** to be submitted through a credential evaluation report for all transcripts because we do not provide evaluations in-house. This evaluation report will translate your grades into US equivalencies. Applicants are responsible for any fees required by an evaluation service. There are a few exceptions; please see below for details.
Please note: All evaluations must be completed by an evaluation service that is endorsed by https://naces.org/members/ or https://aice-eval.org/members/ and must include a GPA.
**Canadian-based institutions (excluding the province of Quebec) will not require a transcript evaluation. High school or equivalent and college transcripts must be directly sent to UMPI by the institution or a transcript service.
High school transcripts must be officially translated or evaluated as part of the admissions requirements. The official document must include a cumulative grade point average (GPA) and a specific graduation date. (Examples include translations/evaluations from a https://naces.org/members/ or https://aice-eval.org/members/ member, or having the high/secondary school provide a translated copy of the transcript directly.)

Applicants will be required to provide proof of English proficiency in one of three options available. Specific information about each option can be found at https://www.umpi.edu/admissions/how-to-apply/#ypi

Non-Degree Registration
UMPI is committed to serving the educational interests and academic aspirations of individuals interested in taking courses for personal enrichment, job advancement, and expanded awareness.
Non-degree study is arranged through the Office of Student Records.
Enrollment in credit-bearing courses requires a high school diploma or its equivalent, and evidence of such may be required. The University may require additional evidence that the non-matriculated student is qualified to study at the 200 level and above. Permission to study full-time (12 or more hours in a semester) in a non-matriculated status may be granted in exceptional cases.
Early College Program
Early College refers to all programs in which high school students enroll in college courses. There are two opportunities to earn early college credits - concurrent enrollment or on-campus/online courses. Concurrent enrollment includes courses taught by college-approved high school teachers at the student’s high school. These courses are considered equivalent to a specific college course at UMPI. On-campus/online courses take place on a college campus or online, along with other college students. https://www.maine.edu/early-college/costs/ may earn up to 12 free credit hours per year beginning on May 1 and ending on April 30. Concurrent and on-campus/online programs are supported, in part, by the https://www.maine.gov/doe/learning/highered/earlycollege.
Students who are expected to graduate with the Class of 2026 may earn up to 12 credits per academic year, tuition-free. Starting with the Class of 2027, qualified students may earn a lifetime total of 18 tuition-free credits. The annual maximum on tuition-free enrollment remains at 12 credits. All credits, regardless of course location (whether taken at a student’s high school, online, or on campus), are counted toward both the annual and lifetime credit caps. This includes credits earned through Maine’s Public Universities and Maine’s Community Colleges, as well as any courses taken through these institutions at the high school level (e.g., Concurrent Enrollment courses).
Students who exceed the lifetime cap may apply for courses as “Self-Pay” students. Students will be billed at the Early College tuition rate(s) established separately by the University of Maine System and Maine Community College System.
Students must create an account through https://explorec.maine.edu/ to explore course offerings and apply for courses. Students must drop or withdraw from their courses on https://explorec.maine.edu/ by the on-campus/online dates listed on the https://www.umpi.edu/early-college/ website. Interested students should contact their local high school Guidance Counselor or UMPI Early College at umpiearlycollege@maine.edu for more information. High school students who enroll in early college courses are more likely to enroll in college, have higher grades, and have a better chance of earning a college degree than their non-early college counterparts.
Veterans Information
UMPI views those who have served or are serving in the United States military and their families as a distinct group that brings unique experiences, culture, and viewpoints to our university.

For more information, contact the School Certifying Official located in the Office of Student Records, Preble Hall, via email at umpi-vets@maine.edu.
Early Admission Program
Early Admission allows students of junior or senior status who have exhibited the requisite proficiencies and achievements in high school to enter University programs prior to their completion of secondary school. Exceptions of class status may be made for exceptionally qualified students at the discretion of the University and its partnering institutions. Students may be admitted individually or under specific institutional memorandums of understanding; courses may be delivered at UMPI or approved external sites. Letters of recommendation for the Early Admission Program should be made by appropriate institutional representatives (e.g., guidance counselors, principals, superintendents). Assurance is also required that a high school diploma will be awarded prior to the fall semester of the student’s sophomore year or concurrently with an associate degree.
