Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community Certification (MHRT/C)

The State of Maine mandates special training for employment in certain public welfare positions. Individuals planning to provide community support services in positions funded by the Department of Health and Human Services and MaineCare (formerly Medicaid) must meet specific knowledge competencies. To meet these competencies and be issued full Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community (MHRT/C) certification, such persons must complete ten (10) course areas through a combination of approved courses, workshops, or waivers. Graduates of an accredited Bachelor of Social Work program meet the requirements for Full MHRT/C certification upon completion of their degree and by completing PHI 374 - Topics in Philosophy and Literature .
A provisional MHRT/C certificate may be issued when five (5) specific course requirements are met through academic courses, non-academic courses, approved workshops and/ or training, or waivers based on experience. These are Introduction to Community Mental Health, Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Crisis Identification and Resolution, Cultural Competency/Diversity, and Interviewing and Counseling. The remaining five courses must be completed within two years of the date the provisional certificate was issued.
Individuals wishing to receive MHRT/C certification must apply through the Office of Adult Mental Health Services at the Department of Health and Human Services.
