This catalog page lists the courses that UMPI believes the Department of Education will require for you to become certified in Maine. Final determination of your needs will come from them. To obtain an UMPI degree, you must have sufficient credit hours from your previously earned Bachelor’s degree that are acceptable for transfer in combination with the courses below to equal the number of credit hours required for the degree.

*Students may choose from four concentration areas for this degree: Math, English, Science, or Social Studies.*

*Canadian students should consult with certification officials within their province to ensure their eligibility for provincial certification with our program as outlined. Your province may require more courses and we offer you the option of choosing additional elective education courses.*

Content Area Requirement - 24 Credits

The student must complete a minimum of 6 credit hours in each of the four content areas:

*MATH: 6 credit hours

*ENGLISH (writing courses preferred): 6 credit hours

*SOCIAL STUDIES (history, economics, political science, geography, anthropology, pyschology, or sociology): 6 credit hours
