The University of Maine System (UMS) and the University of Maine at Presque Isle were granted Unified Accreditation in July 2020, from our regional accreditor, the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE), which is one of six nationally recognized regional accrediting associations and is the official accrediting agency for schools and colleges in the six New England states. Institutional membership in NECHE indicates that the University of Maine System and UMPI have been carefully evaluated and found to meet standards agreed upon by qualified educators. Accreditation of an institution of higher education by NECHE indicates that it meets or exceeds criteria for evaluating institutional quality periodically applied through a peer review process. An accredited college or university has available the necessary resources to achieve its stated purposes through appropriate educational programs, is substantially doing so, and gives reasonable evidence that it will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. Institutional integrity is also addressed through accreditation. For more information about the UMS Unified Accreditation visit https://www.maine.edu/unified-accreditation/
The University is also an institutional member of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.
In addition, several academic programs within the University are accredited by specific agencies: viz., all Teacher preparatory programs by the Maine Department of Education, the Medical Laboratory Technology Associate Degree program by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), the Social Work program by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE), and the Physical Therapist Assistant Program by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).★
