ENG 241 - From Romances to Romantics: Early Anglo-American Culture

3 credits
Survey course emphasizing creative, literary responses to cultural and political developments in a trans-Atlantic context. Students will be introduced to a wide selection of texts (including autobiography, travel and slave narratives, lyric and epic poetry, the essay and drama) starting with the first known poem in the English language and ending with the writings of the Romantics around 1800. Through `close reading¿ and introduction to historical/thematic concerns, students will explore the role of literary forms in shaping society.
