Mission and Outcomes

 

The mission of the Mathematics Department at the University of Maine at Presque Isle is to provide the environment to help our students gain a foundation for life-long learning, critical thinking, and collaborative, technical problem solving.  We will provide our majors with sufficient understanding and experience of mathematics to pursue their careers or graduate study in mathematics and other fields. We will serve our students in the area of pure/applied math, math education and actuarial science.

  1. Demonstrate basic manipulative skills in quantitative calculations.
  2. Demonstrate critical thinking by developing skills in logic and problem solving.
  3. Demonstrate proficiency in reading, understanding and producing mathematical proofs.
  4. Communicate mathematical ideas both orally and in writing.
  5. Investigate and apply mathematical problems and solutions in a variety of contexts related to science, technology, business and industry, and illustrate these solutions using symbolic, numeric, or graphical methods.
  6. Demonstrate abilities of self-learning, investigating and solving unfamiliar math problems.
